Three weeks later, he introduced me to his kids.

I was the first significant woman they’d met in his life, so he approached it with all the planning of a general going to war. He organised diaries with his ex. The kids were to be picked up from her home by him, already showered, dressed and groomed. They were told they were meeting his friend for dinner, and the exact nature of his invitation to his kids and set-up for the evening was researched thoroughly online. I watched his preparations the night before, thinking how adorable he was as he stressed about it, hunched over his laptop on a holo call to them, his gold glasses resting like a professor’s on his nose.

I was to meet them at their favourite restaurant, a café famous for its old Earth Americana-styled burgers and fries.

I pulled up outside in a fly-cab. Smoothing my skirt, I took a deep breath and rushed through the crowded boulevard and into the cool confines of the restaurant.

And there they were. Seated on a table in the corner. Three dark heads clustered together.

Rafe looked up and smiled as I approached. He gave me a silent whistle and nod of appreciation as his eyes flicked over my long maxi dress and elegant sandals. I’d passed the first test.

He rose, welcoming me to the table. Standing beside my man, with his hand around my waist, I gazed at the two gorgeous little humans looking up at me curiously.

‘Kids, this is Zaya, a friend of mine.’

‘Is she your girlfriend?’

The bold question came from Willa as she stared at me shamelessly.

Rafe and I shared a glance.

‘She’s my girlfriend,’ he announced quietly.

I felt emotion bloom in my chest. He’d just declared me to his children.

‘She’s very pretty,’ Willa continued while her brother assessed me with quiet eyes uncannily similar to his father’s.

‘Thank you,’ I told the young girl. ‘You’re gorgeous too.’

I slid into the chair beside her as Rafe found his seat again.

As we ordered, Willa chattered away to me, our souls finding common ground almost instantly.

Max, on the other hand, was deliberate and observant.

He watched us – Willa, Rafe and I – solemnly for most of the meal before he ventured a word. ‘You make daddy happy. That makes me happy,’ he finally proffered.

Such wise, prescient words from such a young soul. My heart melted.

‘I’m glad you think so, Max,’ I told him. ‘You make me happy too.’

We shared a long lazy smile, and at that moment, I felt a particular pity for the women whom he’d devastate with it in years to come.

I looked up to find Rafe’s gaze on me. It was a slow golden burn that penetrated my soul, blistering away the autumn chill in the air around us.

‘So are you two going to get married, like Greg married mum?’ Max asked, his querying face inclined to the side.

Lord! There it was, out of the mouth of babes.

‘Would you mind greatly?’ Rafe asked his son softly.

Max shook his head. ‘I don’t mind.
